My Review of Stephen Fishbach’s *Escape!*
May 26, 2026
I’ve been listening to Stephen Fishbach talk about Survivor on Know‑It‑Alls since the early days, though I drifted away from RHAP after Season 40. I’ve heard him break down blindsides, edit tricks, and the psychology of the game with a blend of neurosis and brilliance.
When I learned he was releasing a novel, I pre ordered immediately. I always have a few books going at once, so it took me a bit to get to this one — but this week, I finally cracked open Escape! If you’re a Survivor fan reading my review, let me save you time:
Buy the book. Buy two. Give one to a friend. Support Stephen
Escape! is a peek inside the reality‑TV machine: twists, backstabs, weather disasters, producer meddling, and the slow unraveling of people who thought they were ready for the game. Stephen’s firsthand experience fills every chapter — the little production manipulations, the emotional engineering, the way contestants talk themselves into believing they’re the hero of the edit.
Years ago, when I was deep in my “I’m going to get on Survivor” era, I devoured everything: the show, the podcasts, Survivor Sucks, Pygmy Island, even UnREAL just to understand how producers think. Escape! scratches that same itch. It’s fiction, sure, but it’s fiction written by someone who knows exactly how the sausage is made.
And then… page 259.
A little line about a Svengali.
Stephen thinks I’d be great at the game?
Page 259 — the “Svengali” moment I’m choosing to believe is about me.
Now, I know Stephen wasn’t actually talking about me — but let me have this moment. After years of listening to him pontificate, tweeting at him, and imagining what I’d do on the island, I’m choosing to believe this was my unofficial cameo. Stephen, thank you for your continued support. Had I ever made it onto the show, I promise you would’ve had plenty to talk about on Know It Alls.
SIDENOTE: As a longtime RHAP fan, I actually tried to get on the dais for the very first RHAP Roast back in 2014. I figured having a listener up there was a great idea — plus (A) I think I’m funny, and (B) I thought maybe, just maybe, casting might notice me.
Am I funny? You decide.
My 2014 RHAP Roast audition tape — proof I’ve been in this Survivor universe for way too long.
Survivor viewers imagine ourselves on the island, making the choices, facing the dilemmas. Novels work the same way. Halfway through Escape! I found myself wondering who I related to more: the players or the producers. And honestly? I read it from the production POV. Because if I ever do get cast, I’m not just playing against the other contestants. I’m playing against the people who’ve been producing this show for 50 seasons. They’re like the Knicks on a playoff run — a well‑oiled machine.
Escape! is a quick, fun, smart read. If you love Survivor, RHAP, or reality TV in general, this book is absolutely worth your time. And again: buy two copies. Stephen deserves it.
